You
may think it odd that I have selected the topic that it is not easy
being a man since I am a woman. However, just because I am not a man
does not mean that I do not reflect on how difficult it must be to be a
man in today's society.
Men are supposed to be rough and tough. Yet, they are supposed to be sensitive. They are supposed to maintain an aura of self-control; yet, they are supposed to be good communicators.
I have a degree in social sciences. One assignment from my college years that stands out in my mind has to do with the study of genders. We were to write about the roles of each gender as it stands presently. My research led me to reflect much on the roles of the genders.
Women are still fighting for equality in the home and in the business world. Studies show that women still cook more, clean more and tend to the children more. Men wonder why women are not as interested in sex as they are. Wake up men. Dr. Phil says that foreplay begins 24 hours in advance. I could go on but I will save this topic for another blog.
With that said, let's look at things from the opposite perspective. Men do not have equality either though ladies. Ask men proportionately how much of the closet space they get. Ask men how much of the money that is earned in the home is spent on them. Ask how many men get custody of the house or the children in a divorce situation, which is the biggest inequality of all. I would not traded having my children with me for anything. Oh I know, some men would prefer to have their freedom, but what about the men who would rather have their children with them more than anything else in the entire world?
The divorce courts almost notoriously assume that the children will remain with the woman. The father will pay a percentage of their pay to support the children. Ladies I know that you can all write, with merit, about this issue and how it is not enough to support the children. The point here is that you have your children with you. What is the value of that award? In my book it is priceless. Oh, I know it is the hardest job. It is the hardest job that we love to do. The men rarely get this option.
I do know of shared custody situations that seem to work rather well for the adults. Please keep in mind the challenges this creates for the children. Do you have sets of clothing and belonging so the children do not need to live out of a suitcase? I teach and children are always forgetting their belongings, including homework, as they must jump from Mom to Dad and Dad to mom.
This blog was not written to judge. It was written as my philosophy is one of empathy. We must try to put ourselves in the shoes of others - the spouse, the children. We will all be better off for it.
There are many injustices and inequalities in this world. Awareness is the key to change. Perhaps if we all spend a little time trying to understand the important issues from all perspectives the gaps can be closed just a bit.
